Dave Dobbyn, Slice of Heaven

This song was one of the first Kiwi songs I ever heard (well, except for the ones I listened to over and over again without realising they were kiwi-made, like all Crowded House songs - doh!). Every time I listen to it, it just stays in my head for the rest of the day. Some songs have that effect on me and that tends to annoy me after a while. This one never annoys me, though - it’s just so positive and uplifting. And if I happen to catch the video on TV, even better. Seriously, doesn’t Dave Dobbyn look like just an all-round awesome guy? I mean, I’ve never met him but the expression on his face is so happy, it always cheers me up too.

I had Slice of Heaven as the ringtone on my phone for over a year, driving my friend P. insane every time the phone rang (because he was so sick of it). P., you’ll be happy to know that I am now one of those boring ringtone kind of people and my phone just sounds like a phone and nothing else. You win.

This song is also part of the soundtrack of one of the first Kiwi movies I watched - Footrot Flats: The Dog’s Tale. They were both fantastic introductions to Kiwi culture. This reminds me not only that I should watch a lot more Kiwi movies but also that I should share with you the ones I’ve watched so far. Except maybe for Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. I still need some time to get over the effect that movie had on me. I mean, she killed her mother! I dare anyone to watch Heavenly Creatures and then sit through an episode of Two and a Half Men without wanting to shout “MURDERER! HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO YOUR OWN MOTHER? HUH?” every time Rose comes on screen. In fact, I double dare you.

So anyway, I’ll finally have a chance to see Dave Dobbyn perform live next month, when he celebrates 30 years as a recording artist (Jeez, I wasn’t even born yet and the man was already making records). Because Dobbyn started his career in 1979, tickets went on sale for $19.79 (for my Euro friends, that’s about 10 euros). Needless to say, the concert is completely sold out and this just confirms my theory that Dave Dobbyn is one seriously good Kiwi dude.

Yay for good artists with long-lasting careers and yay for cheap tickets to concerts!
